Week 14: You are THE BOMB (even if it is a little melted)

Another week of debates in class today! We are certainly able to tell the amount of preparation that went into your arguments. I hope you have found this assignment challenging. There are certain leaders that we always hear are either good or bad, but as you have found out, there are always both good and bad aspects of how they lead.
Have you noticed that all the winners from Thursday's debates argued against the common opinion regarding their assigned leaders?
When you hear of Fidel Castro, Vladimir Putin, and Che Guevara, you don't often hear that they are beloved leaders. But Hannah, Ethan Day, and Gabriel proved that wrong by doing a little bit of homework!
Overall, it was great that you all had the courage to stand up and debate! That is not always an easy thing, especially when you are fighting for something you DON'T believe in. But always remember this class is a practice ground for real world experiences. The more you practice now, the more confident you will be later—especially when you have to do it FOR REAL!

Next week is our LAST DAY OF CLASS!! I can't even believe it!
Thanks to all of you who turned in all your assignments and met all the class requirements. I believe there was a total of 8 people that received their full golden ticket!! Woohoo! You will find out WHERE we will be going next Thursday. Please bring your schedules so we can choose a date for our trip.

We have two debates to finish next week:

Paige vs. Spencer
Benjamin vs. Ethan Hellyer

Then we will receive our Field Day assignments from Ethan Day and Spencer.
And finally you will spend all your class money. So don't forget to bring it to class!

See you Thursday.

Week 13: Leaders Galore

I have loved your leader presentations!  The person you have chosen tells us A LOT about YOU!!
Thank you for going beyond the usual list of great leaders.
I hope you have recognized that EVERYONE can be a leader, especially if they follow their passion and never give up!  Impressive job!

Taylor and Gabriel kicked off the leader debates with Ronald Reagan!
Taylor declared him a great leader because he cut taxes and ended the Cold War.  Gabriel yelled back, no that is not so!!  He focused on the huge budget deficit Reagan caused and his friendliness with communist countries.  Good job digging!!

You all need to thank Gabe and Taylor they afforded you one more week to prepare for your debate!

BE READY TO FACE OFF NEXT WEEK!!!  NO EXCUSES!!!!

We have TWO more weeks of class.  Woohoo!
Everything is DUE NEXT WEEK!!

This includes all the small assignments I have given you.  Have you been tracking them on your homework page?
Make sure you have turned in all your papers, sent in a Ted Talk link recommendation, and finished 20 hours of volunteer work.

If you complete all of this, YOU will be invited to our LEADERSHIP CLASS RETREAT!

It is going to be a great adventure you will be sad to miss:)!

Your first clue to our adventure is

SALT

PS-keep working on your activity plans!

Week 9: Scholars Good, Scholars that read books BETTER

Thanks for all your participation in our book discussion. It makes for such a better discussion when everyone knows what is being discussed and can add their two cents.

Thank you to those who turned in their approach papers and read Animal Farm.  You are one step closer to our Leadership Class RETREAT/ADVENTURE!!!

For homework during Spring Break, you are supposed to send the class a Ted Talk you feel teaches an important lesson on leadership.  Ethan Day sent one about procrastination and the dark playground.  Please follow suit.  I'm looking forward to all these life changing Ted Talks in my inbox.

Keep working on your activities.  You are all doing an AMAZING job planning and prepping these activities.  Hopefully, you are learning many invaluable lessons.  (For example:  You can't please everyone.  Communication is essential.)
Mrs. Schmieder and I will support YOUR plans and YOUR ideas!  We want to see you succeed and learn from the experience.

Also, think about a leader you would like to take an in-depth look into.  Please don't choose a leader you have already reported on in another class.  This doesn't do you any favors.  Expand your horizon and study a leader you don't know much about!  We will talk about this last presentation this Thursday.

See you next week, if not tonight at the Scholar Activity.

Thanks,
Mrs. Poyer

Week 7: Put down the phone/video game/tv remote/basketball/brain candy book, etc

Hi Everyone!
I hope you are working on your priorities this week!  Don't you dare wander into the DARK PLAYGROUND! (Thank you, Ethan Day--https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=arj7oStGLkU&feature=share)
Animal Farm should be on the top of the list!!🐖🐓🐑🐐🐄🐕🐎. Do not let the instant gratification monkey steer you wrong!
We are going to have a fun discussion.  (There will be a treat that pertains to the book.)
Come prepared!  There is no other way to come to class, unless you want to disappoint Mrs. Schmieder and me.😭😭
The book is SO SHORT!  No excuses!!

Here is your homework list:
1) read Animal Farm (even if you have read it in the past!  I want fresh perspective!)
2)complete the approach paper-the worksheet can be found in your binder
3) complete 2 priority worksheets (the one with the circles and the one where you make a to do list)

GOOD LUCK!

If you have any questions, email me!!

Thank you,
Mrs. Poyer

WEEK 6: It's time to PAY UP

Hi Everyone,
I'm so glad we got to congregate on Thursday. And Benjamin kept us awake with his heavy handed gavel work.
Class opened with our new policy.
👉🏾If you are not prepared for class and your assignments, you PAY us class money.
Our class is not difficult!
There is absolutely no excuse not to be prepared.
Preparedness is not only a trait of a Boy Scout, but it is a trait of a good leader!

So STOP PROCRASTINATING!!!!!!!!
We want ALL of you to receive your golden ticket to our leadership class retreat. Even WE are excited!! And we don't get excited about lame things😜.

Thank you to those that came prepared to present your character studies. It was easy to tell who prepared the day of, versus who researched and spent time on their presentation. Winging it DOES work SOMETIMES, but there is no need when you have had TWO weeks to prepare!
You are fooling no one!:). We are doing you no favors by letting you slide through class. You are practicing for real life! Face life prepared.

Mrs. Schmieder and I really enjoyed your presentations. The characteristics you chose were excellent!
We are working through your requirements fairly quickly.
Your last presentation will be an in-depth look at a leader. So start thinking about a leader you want to study. You may not study any leader you have already talked about this semester. For example, Gabe cannot present on Coach Cain, Benjamin cannot present on Richard Winters, etc..

We were impressed with your activity planning. Keep it going. EVERYONE on your team MUST contribute. This means opening your mouth in the planning stage! If you are having a hard time connecting with your group members, study their personality. It might give you some ideas and insight on how to handle them;).

Here are the personalities of our class:

Hannah and Mrs. Schmieder-advocate
Paige and Spencer- mediator
Ben, Taylor, and Noah-campaigner
Ethan H.-executive
Ethan D. And Tillie-Protagonist
Ethan R.- debater
Gabriel - entertainer
Mrs. Poyer - defender

Next Thursday, we will be completing ALL the undone assignments from the past weeks. If this is YOU, get to work!

YOU HAVE TWO MORE WEEKS TO COMPLETE ANIMAL FARM AND YOUR APPROACH PAPER!
You can't complete the approach paper during 3rd hour. (Actually you probably can, but it will not be good and therefore not accepted.)
Thanks everyone!

Please STOP PROCRASTINATING:)!!
It's for your own good;).

Thank you!!

See you next Thursday.

Week 5: Resume Virtues VS Eulogy Virtues

It was so great hearing all you did to work your way up the Levels of Leadership.  I think we are on a solid level 2 as we continue to build our relationship with everyone at FILA.  I hope you realize that YOU can do things to move up the levels on your own!  Please don't wait for me to assign you challenges: ).
Noah and Ethan Riggle need to complete their challenges THIS WEEK!!

In class we took a look at character traits.  We talked about there being two types - those we put on a resume and those read in a eulogy.
The resume traits are worldly and ambitious.  They allow you to build, create, and conquer the world.  The motto is SUCCESS!!
The eulogy traits honor God, creation, and possibilities.  They are developed when you hear a calling and obey.  They answer the question of why  you are here.  The motto is love, redemption and return.
Both traits are very important to developing your overall character and in your pursuit to become a great leader.

Your assignment is to present a character trait to the class that you feel is necessary for leadership.  Please turn to page 8 (Character Study) in your binder for all the details.  This is DUE MARCH 8TH!!  Please mention whether your chosen trait is a resume or resume trait.  (OR BOTH?)
** Don't forget that you each spun the wheel to choose the first letter of the character trait you will present.  Here are the results:
Spencer - P
Hannah - F
Ethan R - A
Tillie - F
Ethan D - H
Paige - M
Gabe - F
Noah - I
Taylor - L
Ethan H. - N
Benjamin - R

HOMEWORK!!  Don't forget to complete your homework lists!  We don't have class on the 15th, but that doesn't mean you have the week off!  Here is what you should be working on:

--Character Study - Due March 8

--Animal Farm --Due March 29
    --acquire book
    --read book
--complete approach paper (page 11 in binder)

--study your personality type--do you agree with the findings?

--Activity Planning with group
--make a list of all the details you need to address in your     planning
--meet with your group on March 15th during the first two     hours of babysitting

Taylor was an excellent gavel bearer on Thursday.  She was not afraid to make some noise!
Who wants to take the gavel this week?  Please respond and let me know!

Also, please respond when you read this and understand what you should be spending your time accomplishing this week; )!!

Any questions?

Thank you,
Mrs. Poyer

Week 3: 10 out of 10!!!

Congratulations to all our leadership book presenters on Thursday!  Ethan Day gave them all 10s!
They certainly did a great job.  Ethan Hellyer read a book that left us all a little boggled!  Thank you for sorting it out for us, Ethan.  I'm putting that book on my future read list.
Benjamin taught us about Lincoln's style of leadership which consisted of walking around!  Leadership is simply walking around, talking with people, gathering information!  Lincoln made it look so simple.
And Noah challenged us to do something hard!  I love that he enjoyed the book, Do Hard Things, so much, that he read the sequel.  I hope you have all been inspired by the books you read and the books others read!!  If you read one of the books that was recommended I will present you with a cool $5 bill of class cash.

We accomplished so much on Thursday.  Hannah did a great job wielding the gavel.
We discussed the levels of leadership.  Our class is definitely moving around from level 2-3.  Can we go higher?  YES WE CAN!

Week 1: Love is in the air

What a great welcome back to FILA's second semester!!!
We've got a new room and a new classmate!  HUGE SCORE!

We started the semester with book presentations from Ethan Riggle and Taylor.  Ethan challenged us to put first things first and even drew a quadrant to help us figure out what is most important.
Taylor encouraged us to do hard things that people don't expect from us.

During our next class, we will hear book presentations from Tillie Blanchard and Paige Preece.

THIS WEEK IS A BIG WEEK FOR US!!  BE PREPARED!

1) Be at FILA at 9 a.m. to set-up for the Valentine Card Exchange
    -We need all hands!!
-Complete all assignments Tillie has given you!

2) Be ready to deliver your candy grams!  You can deliver them during the last 10 minutes of 2nd hour, 3rd hour and 4th hour.  Also, deliver them during LUNCH!!  GET THEM DELIVERED!  Some of you have quite a few.
-I will give you your bag of candy grams when you arrive at FILA.
-Deliver them in a fun way!!  DO NOT JUST HAND THEM TO THE RECEIVER!!!  You better have a fun dance, poem, song, etc to accompany your delivery!

3) Complete your love languages homework!  If you have questions feel free to ask.  I want to hear what you did on Thursday!  THIS IS A HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT!  IF YOU DON'T DO IT, YOU DON'T GET  YOUR GOLDEN TICKET! Remember showing appreciation and love to people can work miracles!!!

4) Come to FILA WITH a Valentine Box!!!  If you don't decorate one, why should anyone else? : )

Hannah, YOU have our Leadership Quick Quote!

THANK YOU!

ps - GOOD LUCK TO ETHAN RIGGLE AT NATIONALS

Week 15: You got a golden ticket (actually, half of a golden ticket)!!!!!!

You ALL did an EXCELLENT job at Parent Night!
Your leadership advice was spot on!  Your activity blurbs were entertaining (especially Paige's!). I heard quite a bit of hoot and hollars from the crowd.  THANK YOU for doing such an amazing job with so little prep time!  The only failure was myself!  I forgot to let Ethan start with his leadership quote.  I'm the worst!  Sorry, Ethan.
But on a happy note, you all received the first half of your golden ticket!  Mrs. Schmieder and I are making magnificent plans for you...so keep working!!!  This semester is going to be BUSY!!!

Our class time on Thursday started with Noah's Leader in the News.  I wish he would've been there to deliver the info to us.
Next, Gabriel and Hannah delivered their book presentations.
Gabriel taught us how to handle our Huns and come back from defeat.  Being able to accept failure and turn it into something positive is one of the best skills we can have as leaders!  Everything should NOT be a WIN, but you can make the losses into learning experiences.

Hannah challenged us to find our element or elements!
I love that this can be a lifelong pursuit.  You are never too old to find your element.
I'm pretty sure that I'm still looking.

Coming up we have MORE BOOK PRESENTATIONS!!

Here is the schedule as I know it to be:

February 1 - Taylor Miller, Ethan Riggle

February 8 - Tillie Blanchard, Paige Preece, Spencer Bullock

February 15 - Noah Giovingo, Ethan Hellyer, Benjamin Poyer

--Tillie will be leading our Valentine's Day Exchange.  She did a great job putting you all to work.  I hope you wrote down your assignments.  I know I have to purchase white bags.  What will you be doing?

--We have one more week to sell our Valentine candy grams!!  Make it count!  Also, next week during class you will have to figure out your delivery game plan!!  This includes coming up with your delivery route and your song and dance routine.  Bring those tap shoes if you have them.: )

Next week get ready for some intense planning!!
Bring your ideas for your assigned activities!!  Bring your calendars!  We are going to get A LOT accomplished!!

Thank you for all your hard work!  I hope you had a great week off from FILA.  I'll see you next semester.

-Mrs. Poyer

PS - I hope you attend our ice-skating meet-up

PSS - This semester Benjamin will be joining us!  I'm so excited.  I don't get to spend nearly enough time with him. : )

Week 14: Dale's biggest fan!

What a great class we had yesterday!

1)Ethan Day set the tone with his incredibly passionate book presentation.  I think Dale Carnegie should hire him as his public relations contact.  I bet each and everyone of you headed to your library to find the book, How to Win Friends and Influence People.  As we heard from Ethan, it is life-changing.  Thank you for the thorough and fantastic presentation.  I've personally thought about many of the stories and steps you mentioned.
My hope is for everyone to have a transforming moment as you read your leadership books.  I can't wait to hear from everyone.  As you prepare for your presentations, read through the page in the binder that lists the questions you must answer.  Keep your presentations concise. (5-10 minutes)  Choose one or two things that really resonated with you as you read and share that!   Next week we will hear from Gabriel and Hannah.

2)In preparation for Parent Night, we learned about three of our country's greatest leaders' personal pursuits of improvement.  George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson were constantly working to improve their character and their advice has lived on.  For Parent Night, YOU will be writing your own leadership advice to share with the Parent Night crowd.  This should be a short phrase or sentence.  Base it on something you have learned or experienced over the course of your time during this first semester of Leadership class.
I've attached the documents that list samples from the Washington, Franklin, and Jefferson documents we used.
If you can't think of your own leadership advice, re-write and modernize one of the advisements from Washington, Franklin, or Jefferson.
We will share these in class on Thursday BEFORE Parent Night.

3) Also in preparation for Parent Night, it was revealed who would lead which activity!
Here are the results:
Valentine's Day Exchange - Tillie Blanchard
Scholar Spring Activity - Ethan R. And Ethan H.
Field Day - Ethan Day and Spencer Bullock
Shakespeare Bake Sale - Paige Preece
Scholar Retreat - Taylor Miller, Hannah Doolin, Noah Giovingo, and Gabriel Poyer
CONGRATS!!  We are looking forward to your plans!

-For Parent Night you will prepare a short blurb about your event.  This is your chance to sell your event and incite excitement.  This needs to be short, sweet, fun, and exciting.  WORK TOGETHER!  You only have a week for this.

4)Please come to Parent Night dressed very nicely.  NO JEANS!!!
Those of you who missed class will get a quick briefing on what we are planning.  So come prepared with your leadership advice and activity blurb!!! And don't forget how you will line-up to walk toward the stage.

If you need help, please email or text me (209-531-7133.)

5) I need to see volunteer hours for Hannah and Taylor.  You need at least 10 recorded on the tracking page in the binder. You can email or send me a picture of your page.
Noah needs to present his Leader in the News THIS Thursday.  It was a requirement to receive your ½ golden ticket.

Noah, Hannah, and Taylor, we missed you yesterday!! PLEASE email or text me if you have questions!!

6) Tillie, please come prepared to discuss your plan for the Valentine Exchange! (Look for my email to you.)

7) Don't forget you need to keep the momentum going for our Valentine candy grams!  SELL, SELL, SELL!

THANK  YOU SO MUCH!!!!
